Introduction to Basic Ugandan Sign Language

Course Objectives

  • Understand the history and progressive development of Ugandan Sign Language.
  • Understand the use of Ugandan Sign Language in terms of their phonological elements like hand shape, non-manual elements, hand orientation, body movement and facial expressions.
  • Understand different categories of sign language such as Iconic, Local and Abstract sign language.
  • Understand different forms and elements used in the context of Ugandan Sign Language.
  • Be able to apply different hand shapes used in Ugandan Sign Language such as Index, Fist, Open, Closed hand shapes among others.
  • Apply and correctly use sign language grammars in sign language formation and constructions when communicating.
  • Understand why it is important to learn and know more about sign language.

Understanding Deaf communities & Deaf Cultures

Course Objectives

  • Understand about Deafness such as its definition, statistics, common views, types, signs, and the causes.
  • Understand the uniqueness and the socialization aspects of the Deaf communities.
  • Understand how the hearing and Deaf communities are interrelated through the oil-water model.
  • Understand the dos and don’ts of Deaf cultures.
  • Understand the unique challenges faced by the Deaf communities and how best they can be supported.
  • Understand more about the definition, roles, and ethics of a sign language interpreter during interpretation.
